Prof. Dr. Marlene Kretschmer
ELLIS Member
Junior Professor (Tenure Track) for Climate Causality at Leipzig University
Marlene`s research centers on the causal drivers and impacts of extreme weather events such as droughts, heat waves, and cold spells. She investigates which large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns and teleconnections are responsible for these events and how they may evolve in a warming climate. To address these questions, she combines modern statistical and machine learning techniques with classical approaches from climate physics. Her overarching goal is to extract actionable climate information from complex datasets to support adaptation to human-induced climate change. This includes improving the prediction of weather and climate extremes and understanding whether—and why—certain types of extreme events are becoming more frequent.
