Franziska Müller
PhD candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry Jena

Franziska Müller is a PhD student in the Department of Biogeochemical Integration at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in the Climate-Ecosystem Disturbance Interactions group. She completed her bachelor’s degree in “Bio-process Informatics” at the University of applied sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf and furthered her expertise in computer science in her subsequent master’s degrees in “Software Engineering” at the University of applied sciences Upper Austria and “Artificial Intelligence and Security” at the University of Calabria. This background allows her to work on the interface between biological processes and artificial intelligence, which are the defining aspects of her work.

At the Max Planck Institute, she is working in the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project “Forest Vulnerability to compound extremes and disturbances in a changing climate (ForExD)” led by A. Bastos. ForExD aims to integrate the study of climate extremes and forest disturbances as part of joint ecoclimatic variability to improve process understanding and attribution of events with strong climate change impacts.

As part of the ForExD project, Franziska’s research objective is to develop a method to classify forest disturbances using deep learning approaches, in order to reconstruct patterns of disturbances such as fire, drought, windthrow, and insects. Despite being new to the Earth Science community, Franziska’s interdisciplinary background enables her to undertake research that combines biogeochemistry and machine learning.
